WHAT ARE SLEEP APNEAS?

Snoring may alert the sleeper to the danger he is in and prompt him to seek medical advice. The consultation will help determine if the person suffer from sleep apnea or not. During sleep apnea, the breathing stops and the patient is subjected to moments of asphyxia during his sleep.

3% of the general population and 10% of men over 40 years old suffer from sleep apnea.

All snorers do not suffer from apnea however all apnea suffers snore.

Detection is particularly difficult in isolated patients: single, widowers, people sleeping alone who are thus not alerted to the danger they are in.

The repeated asphyxia – several dozen or hundreds of times a night – triggered by apnea have an effect on the noble organs such as the heart or the brain. The cardiovascular risk is particularly severe in people suffering from apnea, yet we increasingly become aware of the impact this type of apnea has on other diseases such as diabetes. Two people suffering from diabetes our of three also suffer from apnea that should be treated.

When the apnea occurs, the person sleeping is subjected to micro-awakenings that disrupt the sleep quality. And when we do not sleep properly, we increase the risk to put on weight as well as the risk of social and intellectual dysfunction, errors at work, accidents (drivers must be particularly careful) and others. The problem with apnea is thus extremely important and must be reckoned with.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS?

THE RISKS OF SOCIAL DISRUPTIONE
Each and every one of us must be able to sleep at night to function properly the next day. When sharing the same sleeping space, the snorer’s partner will inevitably suffer from the sound disruptions produced by his or her partner. The non-snoring partner’s sleep and recovery are also affected.

THE PHYSICAL RISKS OF APNEA
The risk in apnea is physical. The repeated asphyxia has a dangerous effect on the cardiovascular, endocranial and neurological systems. One should know that, with apnea:

  • The risk of heart attack is increased fivefold

  • The risk of cerebral thrombosis is increased tenfold

  • The risk of developing diabetes also increases

  • Apnea is a sign of future risk of serious health problems
