LA POLYSOMNOGRAPHY

YOUR SLEEP IS OUR ART

WHAT IS POLYSOMNOGRAPHY?

A sleep study is called polysomnography. During a polysomnography, the specialist monitors the patient’s sleep for an entire night and uses measuring tools to observe his nocturnal activity.

We will study:

  • the brain activity with an electroencephalogram,

  • eye movement,

  • muscle tone,

  • heart activity,

  • breathing through the thoracoabdominal movement, the air flow through the nose and mouth and through the measuring of oxygen in the blood.

We will also place movement sensors to determine if they are benign or if they are the type of rhythmic movements observed in restless leg syndrome, epilepsy and other neurological pathologies.

We may add blood pressure measures at night as well as infrared video synchronised with electroencephalographic recordings to observe the patient’s behaviour during sleep together with physical events.

It is important to note the distinction between in-hospital polysomnography and ambulatory polysomnography.

IN-HOSPITAL POLYSOMNOGRAPHY
  • Requires a night in the hospital

AMBULATORY POLYSOMNOGRAPHY

Ambulatory tests can be performed in two ways:

  • Either: equipment of the patient in the medical office before returning home. The patient disconnects himself and brings the equipment back to the doctor’s office the following morning.

  • Either: the doctor or a technician goes to the patient’s home to install and disconnect the equipment in the best conditions.

The polysomnography test is the basic exam, the gold standard but other techniques and tools may be used.
